Hiring Events and Career Fairs are great places to make a face-to-face impression with an employer.

Stepping into a career fair can feel like entering the lion’s den—intimidating yet full of opportunity. But don’t let anxiety hold you back! This face-to-face interaction is your chance to shine beyond the limitations of online applications.

This opportunity should not be underestimated! It's frustrating dealing with the complications of online job sites like Indeed and getting rejected by AI for missing buzzwords or whatever criteria they use. This moment is different; it’s your chance to make a great impression on employers face-to-face.

Don't know where to start? We've provided a list of what you can do to wow employers at your next career fair!

Pre-register and Prepare

If possible, it's always recommended to pre-register for whatever career fair or hiring event you're attending. That way you can mark it on your calendar weeks in advance and skip the line on the day of the event. Visit our Eventbrite page to pre-register for our November 7th Hiring Event. Additionally, make sure you apply to a few positions beforehand so you can then inquire about them with employers at the event. Not only does this show initiative, but it also allows you to have specific questions ready when speaking with employers.

Dress professionally

Have you heard the saying, "wear your Sunday best"? Make sure you dress nicely and practice good hygiene before you arrive at the event. Indeed has a helpful style guide that explains different types of business attire. If your strapped for cash, most thrift stores or local charities should have affordable options for professional wear. For most entry-level jobs, like at hotels, business casual or better is usually a good choice, like dress shirt and slacks.

Have a copy of your resume handy

It's always a good idea to have a polished copy of your resume printed and ready to give to the employers at the event. If you need help writing your resume, you can use the resume builder on your NCWorks.gov account or check out this article. Make sure you print multiple copies, as you will most likely talk to many employers!

Practice your interview skills

Interviewing can be intimidating, so it’s important to practice your interview skills before a hiring event. Familiarizing yourself with common questions can help you feel more at ease and prepared. For tips, check out the STAR interview response technique here.

Take advantage of your local career center or coach

The Five Stars program and NCWorks can help you with all the things listed above. We can help with resume reviews, mock interviews, and free hospitality training opportunities. Check out the video below for more information!

With these tips in hand, you’re ready to tackle your next career fair with confidence. Remember, every interaction is a step closer to your dream job. Good luck!
